Homework

Homework

Every Monday, the children will be given spellings and times tables homework to help with their learning. Spellings and times tables will be tested on a Friday.

Spellings

Please do encourage the children to practise frequently.

  • Spelling pyramids – these are a useful way of learning new words as they are broken down bit by bit.
  • Robot arms - The children can also use their ‘robot arms’ to help decode their new spellings.
  • Handwriting – the children are to write their spellings in neat cursive handwriting.
  • Sentences - The children are to write a sentence for 5 of their new spellings to help with the structure of a sentence (capital letters, finger spaces and full stops). A challenge could be to write an exclamation sentence or a question and use exciting adjectives or adverbs.

Spelling Bee: A whole school competition. The class who shows the greatest improvement to their scores each week wins! The children are tested every Friday. Please scroll to see the Spelling Bee words below. This is optional practice if your child would like a head start to improve their score.

Times Tables Rockstars!

Please make sure your child is using our ‘Times tables Rockstars’ platform to practise their times tables. Remember this should be at least an hour per week, little and often. There is also a competition each week between classes for the highest percentage of children logging on. If you need your child’s log in details again, please contact me.

When your child achieves 100% on their times table test, they will be able to move onto the next times table.

This is the order: 10x, 5x, 2x, 3x, BRONZE, 4x, 8x, 6x, 9s, SILVER, 7s.

Reading books

Every Friday, the children will be given a new reading book, which will be due back in school the following Friday.

Please read with your child, preferably at least 3 times a week, and write a comment in their reading diary. Those children who continue to do so will be rewarded at the end of the term. Daily practice with an adult can increase their enthusiasm and help them progress even further. It is also very useful to discuss the books they have read to you to help their reading comprehension. We have put some question suggestions in the front of your child’s home reading diary. At Hogarth we have a policy that states all children should have at least 3 signatures in their diaries per week.
